Red River old-timers remember summer afternoons when Opal Gallagher Gwinn’s horses ran down the street on their way to their evening pasture at the Lewis Ranch. Before Opal and others began renting horses to summer visitors, however, horses were a way of life in town.
Today, “city slickers” rent horses for a number of reasons, not least of which is to capture the feel of Red River’s mining days. People of all ages can enjoy a horseback trail ride. As with many activities in Red River, guided trips range from short rides for beginners that begin right in town to all-day treks for more-experienced riders through breathtaking high-mountain terrain.
