6 Ways to Enjoy the Winter
While we love the winter season here at Red River, we realize some people begin to dread the cold when the seasons start to change. Below, some ideas for ways you can make the most of the season and the pretty powder that comes with it.
1. Skiing
Since Red River was just voted best ski town in North America, we couldn’t not flex a little as the reigning champ. So, first and foremost, consider coming to Red River for a ski trip since it’s statistically one of the best ski mountains this gorgeous country has to offer. If you’re hesitant to venture out into the cold, read our winter style guide for ideas on how you can stay warm.
2. Snowshoeing
If you’re the outdoorsy type but not a fan of skiing, snowshoeing may be a great alternative. Check our article on hiking trails to get some ideas of the great spots that you could try. Don’t worry about having your own snowshoes. You can easily rent some here.
3. Hot Cocoa
This is a winter crowd pleasure for all ages, and bonus points if you have a roaring fireplace to gather in front of. Go all out by topping your cocoa with mini marshmallows, sprinkles, and whipped cream. And if you want to get extra fancy, pick up some bean-to-bar chocolate from Chokolá just off the plaza in Taos.
Winter Movie Binge
Winter movies are a great way to enjoy the snow from anywhere! A few suggestions include: Home Alone, Frozen, A Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Happy Feet. This is also a great thing to do if you’re preparing for your ski trip to Red River.
Snow Cones…Canadian Style
This is a fun one to do with kids! First, go out and collect some fresh pow. Keyword being fresh. Since you are collecting snow with the intention of consuming it, it needs to be clean. Next, put your snow in a bowl and pour real maple syrup over it for an easy and quick treat. You can make strawberry snow cones by first making a strawberry syrup and then pouring the syrup over the snow.
Hot Tub
Last but not least, one of our favorite things to do on frosty days is soak in a hot tub! We recognize this may not be available for everyone, but if you are planning a winter trip to the mountains, consider looking at stays that offer a hot tub as an amenity so you can take full advantage of this winter activity. There’s truly nothing like watching snowflakes fall while you’re neck deep in steamy water.
Hopefully this list is your permission slip to fully embrace (and enjoy!) the winter season that’s now in full-swing.
