What to Pack for Your Trip to Red River, New Mexico - Winter Edition
When prepping for a trip to Red River, don’t forget to also plan for the elevation increase. We are located at 8,750 feet above sea level which means temperatures drop steeply and suddenly - even in the summer months. It’s also vital to stay hydrated to help your body acclimate and ward off any signs of altitude sickness. Below are some tips to help you prepare and make the most out of your vacation.
Layers
Temperatures can drop quickly, even in the summer, so make sure you pack layers. A warm hat, light gloves, and wool socks are recommended along with long pants and a jacket. If you’re visiting during the monsoon season (usually in July), you may also want to pack a rain jacket.
Hiking Boots
With hiking being one of Red River’s main attractions, make sure to squeeze some durable walking shoes into your luggage. If you’re especially into walking, trekking and climbing, an autumn visit to Red River is a must, as there are plenty of trails lined with golden aspens and cottonwoods. Check out a few of our favorites here.
Water Bottle
You'll drink more water if it’s easy and convenient, so set yourself up for success and make sure to bring a reusable water bottle with you. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do to curb altitude sickness, so this is definitely something you want to prioritize.
Liquid Clorophyll
Altitude sickness occurs when our bodies don't adjust quickly enough to the lower oxygen in the air when we experience an elevation gain. Adding liquid chlorophyll to water can combat this by increasing the amount of red blood cells, and therefore increasing the body’s ability to absorb more oxygen. You can order this online or check at your local herb store. Taos Herb is a favorite of ours.
Waders for Fly Fishing
New Mexico is known for its variety of trout and Red River is home to some of the state’s most special spots. Local fishing guides recommend these for beginner anglers. Discover our favorite spots for fly fishing here.
