Rafting

Tackling the rapids of the mighty Rio Grande, the refreshing, cool, clear waters splash over you and into your raft! Paddling wildly, you’re soaring through stretches like “The Rock Garden,” where the river plunges 90 feet in less than a mile. Everyone in your group is grinning madly on this whitewater adventure. And you take a mental photograph because that’s all you have time for before the next class-four rapid.  “What a way to spend the day,” you think. And you’re right. Adventures like these come along only once or twice in a lifetime.

What to bring

White water rafting in northern New Mexico depends on snowmelt for its thrills. This means a bikini may not be appropriate attire for a day of adventure. Following are recommendations from various rafting companies on what to bring for an enjoyable day on the water:

• Early season, many companies offer wetsuits at no extra charge. Contact your rafting company for recommendations on proper attire.
• In warmer weather, lighter clothing may be acceptable.
• Old tennis shoes or secure sport sandals.
• Baseball cap or visor
• Sunglasses
• Water bottle
• Waterproof sunscreen
• Cash for tipping your guide
• Dry change of clothes for après rafting!
• Bring a great attitude and be ready for some fun!
