With the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the overuse of gadgets and electronics, there is nothing more healing than heading off into the woods in the wintertime.  Snowshoeing is one of the few winter sports that can be enjoyed by the entire family.  It is as easy as walking.  If you are looking for a vigorous workout or a leisurely stroll through the woods, snowshoeing is the perfect activity.

Stop and listen to the silence of a snow-filled forest—it will be your best day ever!

Where To Go For Snowshoeing

Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area, (EFXC) The only full-service XC area in New Mexico.  They are located 3.5 miles east of Red River just below the summit of Bobcat Pass on Highway 38.  EFXC has more than15 kilometers of marked snowshoe trails and 30 kilometers of ski trails, which include 5 kilometers of trails you can ski with your BFF (best furry friend).  XC ski or snowshoe through 1,400 acres of spectacular views that include Wheeler Peak, Gold Hill, Upper Valley, and the Latir Wilderness.  Meander through aspen groves, wide-open meadows, and old-growth forests with your family and friends.

The area sports a full-rental shop with cross-country skis, boots, snowshoes, and poles as well as performance snowshoes for running. Tow-sled rentals are also available for the little ones and gear sleds are available with Yurt rentals.

It is possible to rent snowshoes in town and head to any area in the Carson National Forest surrounding Red River (the Nature Trail and Pioneer Canyon are good short treks).

Keep your feet warm. Generally insulated, waterproof boots are the best choice for snowshoeing but hiking boots or waterproof running shoes (with gaiters) will work. If running is your speed, match waterproof running shoes with lightweight running snowshoes (best on packed terrain).

Gear Up!

Snowshoeing can heat you up rapidly, even on colder days. Wear warm clothing in layers, boots/waterproof shoes are recommended for snowshoeing. Finally, ALWAYS bring a hat and gloves and sunglasses or goggles!
